Job description

We are currently partnering with a Local Government in London, who are recruiting for a Homelessness/Civil and Housing Litigation Lawyer to join their growing team on a permanent basis.

This is a full-time position with a salary band of £55,155 to £61,617 and the start date is subject to notice.

You will be required to attend the offices in Wembley or Court at least three times per week.

Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • To actively support the management of the department

  • To provide high level and proactive expert legal advice on homelessness to the Council, its members and officers and to be a point of contact for members and senior officers on legal matters pertaining to homelessness

  • To attend court or tribunals or public inquiries as a Senior Homelessness Lawyer and in particular, conduct high quality advocacy in the County Court, High Court including all hearings up to trial and appeals and including complex hearings

  • Advising the Council and senior officers on Housing Law and related matters

  • Allocation of work to appropriate members of staff

  • Monitoring the quality of work undertaken by the team

  • Managing a team of around 4 and ensuring adequate training and development

Experience required:

  • Experience of attending court as an advocate in the County Court, Magistrates Court, Single Family Court and Crown Court, including all hearings up to trial

  • A track record of achievement in conducting high level and complex casework, including high risk cases

  • Experience of dealing with complex cases in area of expertise

  • Experience of providing advice to members of a Council/ Board

  • Members on legal issues both in public meetings, through presentation briefing reports etc

  • Experience of contributing to corporate decision making and development of corporate policy and strategy

Skills, knowledge and expertise required:

  • A current practicing certificate (either as a Barrister, Solicitor or Legal Executive)

  • A can-do attitude with the confidence to lead a team

  • Strong experience in all matters relating to housing law/Civil Litigation

  • Ability to anticipate problems and solve them accordingly

  • Must be dependable and self-reliant

Working hours:

  • 36 hours per week

  • Office attendance required three times a week
