Job description

Our client, based in Greater Manchester, is currently recruiting for a Senior Democratic Services Officer on an initial 3-month temporary contract.

The position is due to start immediately on a part-time basis (30 hours across 4 days). The hourly rate is £30 - £35 via an Umbrella company.

The successful candidate must have a comprehensive understanding of the statutory framework underpinning local authority decision making.

Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Supporting the Head of Democratic & Electoral Services in the strategic direction and development of the team in continuing to provide successful, transparent local decision making

  • Clerking the full range of the Council's committee meetings (Regulatory, Scrutiny and Area Governance), and providing support as necessary to other aspects of the combined team, such as clerking School Admission Appeals and supporting the delivery of elections

  • Supporting the Mayor and the civic function including making arrangements for civic events throughout the year

  • Supervising and mentoring junior colleagues

  • Utilisting the mod.gov system

 

Experience & Skills required:

  • Extensive experience of clerking council committee meetings (Cabinet, Scrutiny, Area Committees and regulatory), including the production of agendas
  • Knowledge of local authority Constitutions and law and practice underpinning it
  • Experience of working in a local government, public sector or similar environment
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Communicating effectively in both written and face to face communication

 

Working hours:

  • 30 hours per week across 4 days
